Research Breakthroughs In Joint Pain Relief

When searching for joint pain relief from osteoarthritis, it is good to have information about the latest breakthroughs on joint pain relief.

A recent study conducted by Henry Ford Hospital researchers suggests that electromagnetic pulses provide joint pain relief for osteoarthritis. This study, which was conducted through randomized placebo control, discovered that electromagnetic waves minimized instances of joint pain and inflammation brought about by osteoarthritis. Thirty-four patients who participated in the study strapped a portable battery-operated electromagnetic device that produces low-intensity pulsating electromagnetic frequency around their knees for 15 minutes, two times a day for six weeks. In the first day alone, 40% of the patients felt relieved from joint pain because of the electromagnetic device. The apparatus was created and developed by the Ivivi Health Sciences in Montvale, New Jersey.

Electromagnetic signals are able to alleviate joint pain because the signals decrease calcium in cartilage cells during tests, explains Dr. Fred Nelson, associate program director for research in the Osteoarthritis Center in Henry Ford Hospital. This leads to a reduction of inflammation. According to Dr. Nelson, this new approach is relatively low-cost in the long run, has no side effects and offers immediate joint pain relief.

The study was funded by Ivivi Health Sciences, the makers of the device.

More research is still being planned so as to verify if electromagnetic pulses are the real catalysts for joint pain relief. The effectiveness of low-intensity pulsating electromagnetic therapy needs to be corroborated with more trials. There is much debate on its effectiveness. Further trials with measurements on duration of the joint pain relief and with much larger scales will have to be done.

Osteoarthritis of the knee is a degenerative joint disease which gradually damages the cartilage in the joints. The slow, progressive degradation of the joint cartilage is caused by trauma, aging or infection. Joint pain, stiffness, tenderness and locking are common symptoms of osteoarthritis. The disease makes it painful and hard for the sufferer to engage in normal, day-to-day activities.

For osteoarthritis sufferers, the current treatments may be anti-inflammatory and joint pain relief medication. Other treatment options for them are support devices, physical therapy, surgery, and joint replacement.

Exercise also contributes to joint pain relief. It is helpful to stretch muscles and build up muscular strength in order to have stronger joints and alleviate stress on them. The patient should take care however, to consult an orthopedic doctor on what exercise routines are safer. You should also avoid activity that puts more stress on your affected joints.

Other health and behavioral medications such as a healthy balanced diet and weight loss also provide joint pain relief.

In a recent initial laboratory research conducted by scientists at the University of East Anglia (UEA), broccoli has been linked to joint health. The initial study has found that sulforaphane, a compound found in broccoli, blocks the enzymes that cause the destruction of the joints in osteoarthritis cases. The UEA scientists plan to do further investigation into the effects of broccoli in slowing down or preventing osteoarthritis.

New strategies for relief of joint pain certainly improve osteoarthritis sufferers’ quality of life. People who are seeking joint pain relief should stay updated on the latest research and findings on the fight against osteoarthritis.
